Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha expressed his humble gratitude for His Majesty the King’s endorsement to appoint him as Prime Minister and stated that it was the utmost honor of his life and entire family.
He was well aware of the great and significant duty which requires his responsibility to lead the country and people. Followings are what he intends to do as the Prime Minister of Thailand.
Formation of the cabinet - Deputy Prime Ministers, Ministers, Deputy Ministers and Ministers to Office of the Prime Minister will be selected for administration of state affairs to commence the soonest possible. List of the cabinet will be proposed to His Majesty the King within September 2014.
State administration in all dimensions will be performed under the role of government, Prime Minister and the Cabinet, in parallel with mobilization of urgent tasks that need immediate attention. The Government and National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) will closely collaborate on actions and implementations related to state affairs. Both will take caution in transgression of each other’s authority, while conducting a check and balance for the sake of transparency. He urged the public not to be too concerned of individuals.
The Prime Minister added that now we need to immediately reinforce all systems in order to fight against corruption. Public administration, civil servants, police, military, as well as central, regional and local administrations must be improved and strengthened in all dimensions in order to prepare for and accommodate national reform which will move forward the country and ensure good governance of the political sector in its administration of state affairs. Nevertheless, the people are still the most significant and keys to the success of state administration and solution to various economic, social, cultural, legal, and judicial problems of the country. National economy, in particular, has been facing with serious challenges, and so has the agricultural sector. The Government, people, and all sectors must join hands in working out all these existing problems. This is also to prepare the country for the realization of ASEAN Community and ASEAN Economic Community in 2015.
On security affairs, there are still a number of problems to be addressed, such as border problems (border demarcation, illegal migration, illegal smuggling), problems related to internal security (narcotics, crimes, weapons, gambling, illegal migrant workers), etc.
On economy, the most important agendas to be addressed by the Government are implementation of concrete actions in accordance with the National Economic and Social Development Plan; investment promotion in various sectors; reduction of economic disparity; increase of revenues for farmers and low-income people; restructure of tax system; energy; infrastructure; and problems related to people’s livelihood. The Government pledged to quickly address these issues and ensure no further long term problems would be entailed.
On social and cultural aspects, educational system; awareness building; indoctrination of ideologies; sustainable preservation of Thai culture; preservation of natural resources; environmental protection; as well as indoctrination of core values are keys to sustainable solution of various problems of the country.
On legal and judicial system, amendment of obsolete laws which are no longer in line with international laws and obligations, as well as other laws will be carried out.
In tackling with all the aforementioned problems and challenges, the Government, NCPO, and all the Thai people must collaborate. The floor is opened up for all to join hands in solving national problems. National Reform Council, unlike National Legislative Assembly which must strictly follow legal and judicial process, holds no restriction or regulation and openly welcomes all sectors and factors, name it, political parties, people sector, economists, academicians, civil servants, media, and representatives of various sectors, to join in the 11 areas of national reform. According to the Prime Minister, the Government does not want anyone to miss out the path to democracy which would lead to sustainable and stable future of the country.
Lastly, the Prime Minister pledged that he would incessantly commit himself to the duties with honesty and integrity, and will uphold national interests and people’s benefits in order to return gratitude to the country, and to bring back happiness and unity to all Thai people. He thanked everyone in advance for the cooperation given to the future work of Government and NCPO.
